Details
The Swami Large Pendant by Arteriors Home draws its form from utilitarian fishing baskets of Southeast Asia, where hundreds of thin Buri sticks are hand-bound into a bell shape that feels both sculptural and functional. The natural wood gradually darkens into black at the base, creating an ombre effect that suggests depth and movement rather than a flat gradient. Arteriors Home employs traditional weaving techniques to construct the shade, a labor-intensive process that gives the piece its irregular, breathing quality. Light filters through the gaps between sticks, casting soft shadows that shift as the sun moves through a room.
The antique brass hardware anchors the organic form with restraint, allowing the material to remain the focal point. Hung above a dining table or in an entry, the pendant's scale becomes apparent. The bell widens generously, creating a presence that doesn't overwhelm. The ombre staining means no two pieces read identically; the transition from natural to black varies subtly across the surface, a reminder of handwork and material variation. The Buri itself carries the patina of its origin, with visible grain and slight irregularities that deepen its character over time. This is not a pristine object. It settles into a space with the quiet confidence of something made to last, catching light differently depending on the hour and the angle from which you view it.Â
